Catherine D. Lawhon
prefers to work in oils on canvas. Her portraits are to be found in homes across the country as she has been painting portraiture since the 60s. She graduated from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and has more recently studied with well-known portraiturists and artists Paul Leveille, Steve Childs, Clayton S. Beck III, Ramon Kelly and Linda Kyser Smith in Santa Fe and Scottsdale. A member of the Portrait Society of America, she calls her portraits "expressionistic." "The wonder of the human spirit is in its variety -- people are perpetually changing -- and that spontaneity of the moment is what I try to capture."
"La Nina de Cuzco" was recently featured at Woman Made Gallery's Annual Auction. Chicago's Woman Made Gallery does a great job of discovering and introducing top women artists.
Two of Catherine's paintings from her "Keep Her . . ." series ("Keep Playing Dress-up" and "Keep Your Posture") were selected for a group show "Signatures of Age" juried by Helen Redman and subsequently sold at the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago.
"Market Morning", an oil painting by Lawhon, was selected for the juried show "The Best and The Brightest" at Scottsdale Artists' School in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Tulsa State Fair displayed ribbon- winning paintings during the annual event. She won Best of Show in the Plein Air Event last year and two this year.
Her paintings were among those sold at the annual 5X5 show at the Tulsa Artists Coalition gallery, for the past three years.
"The Fisherman" and "Sophia by Moonlight" won lauds of Honorable Mention at the Northeast Area Artists Show, sponsored by The Oklahoma Arts & Humanities Council.
